Although France played a more significant role, Spain also joined in the battle against Britain during the American Revolution. Spain entered into an alliance with France with the expectation that France would help Spain get back Gibraltar, the Floridas, and the other lost territories from Britain. Spain officially entered the war on June 16, 1779. Although Spain's interest in the war was for personal gain, not helping the Americans, they provided additional military action against Britain.
